Bottom Mount
Knowing the logic behind bottom mount freezers is not that hard to understand. As with most models and features, if there is a need for it, then manufacturers would fill in that demand. In the case of bottom mounts, the need for easier access to the fresh food compartment gave birth to this kind of refrigerator configuration.
The simplest way to describe bottom mounts is that they are just top freezers in reverse. Meaning to say, the freezer is placed at the bottom instead of the top, and the fresh food compartment is placed at eye level. Of course, this kind of design is not done facetiously. There is a market for these models, even though it may not be that large. You can find that every fridge manufacturer would at least have one bottom mount model in its catalog.
Who would be interested in buying bottom mount freezers?
The profile of the people who would make use of bottom mounts are those who frequent the fresh food section of their fridge, and also the people who do not make much use of their freezers. When you consider this, vegetarians would be interested in this kind of fridge since their vegetables are at eye level and are within easy access. Another class of people who would be interested in this model are those who don’t do much cooking. If all they do eat are take-out dinners and microwaveable food, then bottom mounts would be more to their liking.
Why is that? First is the convenience. This is because they don’t need to bend over to access the fresh food compartment. Everything is within easy reach since the compartment is at eye level. Second would be the savings in energy consumption. Since these models have the freezer at the bottom with a separate door or compartment, you don’t have to let the cold out of the freezer to access food in the fridge. You get the same energy-saving features of two-door fridges.
Disadvantages of bottom mounts
Of course there are limitations to bottom mounts. The flip side is you would have to bend over to load stuff in the freezer. This may not be a big deal for people who don’t make use of the freezer that much, but for those who do, this can be a bother. Another is that the models and features for this fridge design is limited. So, you may not get much aside from basic functionality from bottom mounts. Since the market for them is relatively small, you may not get as much bells and whistles when compared to other fridge configurations. One other thing to note is that bottom mounts are more expensive as compared with top freezers. So you also pay a premium for the convenience that these models bring.
As you can see, bottom mounts are not really for everyone. These have a specific market to cater to, which is the reason for its particular design. If you’re more fond of the fresh food section of your refrigerator than of your freezer, or if you don’t do much cooking for yourself, then bottom mounts can be the model for you.
