General Electric Refrigerators

GE is an American company that has recently been named one of the largest companies for 2009 by Forbes Magazine. It traces its origins back in 1892 with the merger of Edison General Electric and Thomson-Houston Company. GE came out with its first refrigerator in 1923, but, prior to that, the company has been a leader in innovation, coming out with such inventions as the lightbulb and, later on, turbine jet engines.

The company produces refrigerators categorized into three segments: the GE refrigerators, the GE Profile, and the GE Monogram Refrigerators.

Types of refrigerators

GE refrigerators can come in various models. These include top freezer, bottom freezer, side by side, and compact refrigerators. Top freezer units sport a small freezer compartment on the top portion of the refrigerator, which has its own door and temperature control. This feature lets the freezer compartment to be defrosted independently from the rest of the unit. Bottom freezer refrigerators have the freezer mounted on the bottom.

Side by side refrigerators have two doors that open to the sides from the center. These units are divided into vertical compartments, and shelving may be narrower than regular single door units. Side by side refrigerators can range from 28 to 34 inches in width and depth as well as 66 to 69 inches in height. Just like other types of refrigerators, these units have adjustable bins and shelves.

Compact refrigerators differ from regular units in size. These usually go as tall as your kitchen counter tops and have about 4 to 5 cubic centimeters of storage capacity. Compact refrigerators are often purely fridge, but there are other units that also come with a small freezer compartment on top.

GE refrigerators can also come in two styles — built-in or freestanding. You can use whichever will fit the decor of your kitchen best.

Your choice of what model and style to buy will essentially depend on your kitchen space, storage needs, and how your kitchen is configured.

Top GE refrigerator models

The GE Profile PDSS5NBWLSS 25.3 Cu. Ft. Stainless Bottom-Freezer Refrigerator is among the most popular models from this manufacturer. Despite the hefty price, no one can deny that this is one of the best refrigerator units out on the market today. With a price tag of $1,9000, you can expect a few special features on this side by side unit that you can find in other brands with the same price range. Some of these features include the patented BrightSpace interior with GE Reveal lighting, the multi level Slide n Store basket system which is composed of three full sized baskets for the optimum in storage, and the Condiment Bin and Beverage Rack.

Another top GE model is the French door GE PFSF5NJWBB GE Profile. This bottom door freezer mount is a good mix of classic elegance and GE durability, with its contoured doors and sculptured handles, External Water Dispenser with TurboCool settings, and the Freshness Center.

For the best top freezer GE refrigerator, you can choose the GE GTS18SHS which is one of the smaller units but comes in sophisticated stainless steel, a factory-installed ice maker, and the illuminated Upront Slimline Temperature Controls.

Key features of GE refrigerators

Key features you would typically find in any GE refrigerator include the following:

• climate controls
• custom appearance
• removable freezer baskets, bins, and clear shelving
• self-closing doors

GE models come with the patented ClimateKeeper system, which is a dual evaporator system designed to keep produce safer and fresher for longer periods of time. GE refrigerators are also known for their custom appearance — from plain white to stainless steel finishes that you can choose according to the design and appearance to match the rest of your kitchen. Removable shelving facilitate convenience in food storage and retrieval, and self-closing doors ensure that no cold air is able to seep out, causing you a whole lot of wasted energy.

Unique features the make GE fridge units stand out, on the other hand, include the Gallon door storage, LED lighting, and in-door water filters. Gallon door storage has been designed for the storage of large milk containers that are hard to store in other refrigerators. Consumers can have the option of purchasing GE refrigerators with or without water filtration or ice making systems.

Troubleshooting GE refrigerators

If you are an owner of a GE refrigerator, you may have encountered a few problems as you were using it through the years. Although GE units are known for their durability, dependability, and longevity, problems tend to crop up as your unit gets older. This is where knowledge about a few GE troubleshooting tips may come in handy.

When the refrigerator is not running, check to make sure it is plugged in or properly inserted into the wall outlet. When this does not work, check your home’s circuit breakers to see if electricity is available through the wall outlet where your unit is plugged.

Changes in your unit’s fridge or freezer temperature may require a few hours to take effect. Typically, you need to wait at least 24 hours for your adjustments to take effect.

When the ice maker or water dispenser is not working, check if the water supply is hooked up, and if enough water is being pumped into the compartment. A replacement of the filter cartridge may be needed if ice cubes from your fridge turn out small or hollow.

To make sure that the gasket is in good condition, clean it regularly using a moist piece of washcloth, making sure to remove all the dirt particles and other debris from the gasket folds.

Common complaints with GE refrigerators

Despite the fact that this is a longstanding brand with one of the best reputations in the world, GE refrigerators can still improve in some areas, particularly when it comes to lighting, handles, and water filters. Units from this brand often come with bulky lighting systems which take up a lot of storage space. GE units are also known for loose handles as well as for its water filtration system that takes up as much as a fourth of the space in side by side models.
