A refrigerator is a household necessity in this age. Restaurants and hotels have to have this appliance in bigger and more quantities. And because of the growing demand for the appliance, manufacturers have come up with many variations that offer different sizes, capacities, and features that will cater to the consumers’ requirements, needs, preferences and tastes. A base model refrigerator generally has one to two drawers, wire shelving, non-adjustable shelves/bins, and may only have a partial shelf in the freezer.
The best feature is the unit that has a Frost-Free operation but this is present only in the latter, newer, and more sophisticated models. Aside from the basic features, the main considerations in the acquisition of refrigerators are the capacity (model capacities range from 6 cubic feet to 23 cubic feet); size or dimension as this will depend on the area where the unit is to be installed; features; the actual purpose, demand, and use of the unit (whether there will be more fresh food or frozen meat to be stored); and the various add-ons. The color and external finish (e.g., white, colored, or stainless) of the refrigerator also need to match with the kitchen’s general look.
The more modern models have other features that include humidity and temperature controls; Energy Star qualified for best energy savings; ice maker and dispenser; in-door water and ice dispenser; reversible door; adjustable shelving to accommodate high items or slide-outs to assist in retrieving food; at least two but preferably three drawers/crispers; glass shelving to contain spills; removable door bins; deli or meat keeper; enclosed back coils; quick cool compartment; freezer shelving; freezer interior light; and butter keeper.
More about the top freezer
The most common refrigerator has both the regular food storage compartment and the freezer. But there are units that do not have a freezer compartment to cater to those users who have separate freezer units. A top freezer refrigerator has the freezer compartment situated at the upper section of the unit, at eye level, and is directly above the fresh food compartment.
It is also referred to as a top mount refrigerator and is the model popular model compared to the bottom freezer refrigerator or the side-by-side refrigerator. The bottom freezer model has the freezer compartment at the lower portion of the refrigerator unit. Both the top and bottom freezer models may or may not have separate doors. A Side-by-side refrigerator is characterized as having a freezer compartment which is located laterally adjacent a fresh food compartment. A French door model has two refrigerated top sections with a freezer on the bottom.
Top freezers tend to be more energy efficient and allow larger size storage. They offer better organization and more usable space. The later models now have the ice and water dispensers located at the freezer section of the unit. A drawback to a top freezer refrigerator is one has to bend down to reach the fresh food.
Since the top freezer has become one of the more popular refrigerator units, major manufacturers have come out with their own models for this type. As of today, Fisher and Paykel, Whirlpool, Kenmore, General Electric, Electrolux, Hotpoint-Ariston, Maytag, Kitchen Aid, Sunbeam, Frigidaire, Westinghouse, and LG are some of these appliance manufacturers with their own line of top freezer refrigerators.
